Received my surround kit today that i bought on ebay for uber cheap, hooked it up to the pute and except for volume its almost identical in performance to the one in my lounge that cost 15x more (literally). Makes a great difference over my old 2.1 setup. Now I can watch my movies on the pute in beautiful surround before i burn em off ;D

HYa teddirez,
It all depends on the brands used. If you use an audigy x soundcard from Creative, you'll have to pay a bit, but there is no better sound on your computer. (or at least not in costumers sale)
Anyway they are selling now the 7.1 systems over here.

8 speakers! i had a hard enough time finding space for 6, maybe in a home theatre setup would be ok, but for the computer, well maybe just a bit overboard, as cool as it would be still.
I have 2 sound cards running at the mo, neither are top of the line gear, but they are both mid range creative brand. 1 goes to the speakers and the other to the headphones.
I tested some surround sound headphones the other week. They were amazing! I was highly sceptical at first but the effects really sounds better then many proper surround systems i've heard. The only thing it was missing was that true bass you get from big subwoofers. But still very cool indeed.

Well I run with Creative Audigy with 5.1 as 7.1 is not yet the standard, though it might become within a year or so, so I am hooked up with 5 speakers and 1 subwoover, but the sound is that great that it can only be better with the 7.1 system. (Movies and all Music in Dolby surround at top quality).
I do have one of the same kind of headsets, not only headphones but als mic, but it is special as it is made to work properly with speechrecognition, Dragon Naturaly Speaking Preferred 7.0 (or at least that is the one I have got) but this headset is so expensive you need to think quadripple before buying it.
