Tips on how to avoid or reduce the volume of spam coming to your mail box:
Turn off advanced settings Spam senders often enclose little pieces of program code, to reveal if you in fact open your spam mails. This way they will know whether they have an address that actually works ¡V and you are caught in a vicious circle. If you turn off JavaScript ¡V and even better HTML in your email program, you can avoid unintentionally disclosing your existence. Another option is to turn of the preview in your mail program, so that you will actually have to open the mail to read it.
Never answer spam Though most spam mails promise that you can have your name cancelled from their mailing list, this is often just another way to find out if the receiver in fact reads the mail. If you answer a mail, or try to cancel it, you will not only receive another mail, but hundreds!

;D most important I think is not to subscribe to all kinds of programs or other things on the internet. Or check wether they send mail. This is one of the major sources of spam.

what about not telling everybody your mailaddress ?? The less people that know it the less it can get spammed.

I wouldnt often regard emails i get from ppl i know as spam tho, emails are usually syphoned from the net somewhere such as forums like this, websites or bought mailing lists off somewhere you legitimately signed up. Others are just from bots that run through a host of possible names, similar to how brute forcing passwords works.
My Gmail (thanks Susan) has pretty good spam filtering, as does hotmail now. But hotmail still sux and blows
